Quote:You have to wonder what toxic gases are seeping up from the foundation of Sony's American headquarters. What mysterious compound, when affixed to a functioning brain, would warp perception to such an extent that this constitutes an invigorating communique? Can anyone tell me - does any man know - the precise trajectory of this platform?
Two and half years into their ordeal, it's hard not to imagine owners of the Playstation 3 marching in a ragged, serpentine column toward some promised yet thoroughly imaginary Kennaquhair. Is there someone at the tiller of this brand? In my mind, nature has already begun to reclaim their workplace - CAT-5 and tangled vines matted together in an impromptus drape. Were I to call corporate, the phone might be answered by a curious macaque.
When I see people talking about how great it's going to be creating text chat rooms on their next-gen gaming system, the extent of their Stockholm Syndrome becomes apparent. They have begun to empathize with their captors. What normal people want is voice chat. And they want it inherent - available throughout the experience, an assumption. It's entirely possible that Sony doesn't understand the importance of the feature. I don't actually believe that, but I'm feeling bad about the stuff I wrote above and my better nature is beginning to surface. |

They've poked fun at some of Sony's shenanigans on the PS3 before, but what do you think here? Are they being a little too hard on 2.80 here? I actually prefer text-based communication methods over voice chat if only because hearing people yacking while I play a game aggravates me. Even hopping on Team Fortress 2, I much prefer playing when people just type in what they have to say, and there's relative silence besides the sound of gunfire while playing.

If text entry wasn't so bloody painful using a PS3 controller, I might think this isn't an entirely bad idea. I can understand having voice chat for a shooter or even for an RTS, though I don't think I'd like to take my chances on something like EndWar or Lifeline.
On a more whimsical note, it could be very funny to let your friends watch you play an RPG and provide color commentary "Pop Up Video" style.

Haha, especially with random trivia thrown in, and a slew of hilarious icons to help denote what's going on.

How many of us actually use all the extra functionality of the PS3, like web browsing or as a media player? Not me -- I use it fully as a game machine. I have nothing against Sony doing their best to keep their machines current and fully patched. In fact, it's great. My only problem with the PS3 updates is how long they take. It's most annoying when I just want to play a snippet of some online PS3 game and it says there's an update and it spends the next hour or so updating. At which point I walk away or go to bed.
I'll have to remember to do the update when I get home so I'm not all geared up for some Killzone 2 then get stymied by an update.
