 MLB 2k09
« Thread Started on Apr 8, 2009, 12:10am »

So, has anyone been playing MLB 2K09?

I don't play a whole lot of sports games. Some Madden here and there. The last time I played a baseball game, I was reviewing MVP Baseball 2005 for AE. I gave it an 8.9 out of respect for the level of detail, but honestly, I didn't get the appeal. I love baseball, and I love videogames, but I just don't know about baseball videogames, you know? (For that matter, I don't really understand the appeal of fantasy baseball.)

But, I was jonesing so hard for this season to start that I traded in half a dozen old games at my local Gamestop to check out MLB 2k09. And, I've got to say, it's kind of fun to beat every team you play by at least 10 runs, but this game is way too easy to be really satisfying. Once you figure out how to hit (err, power to right field if you've got a left handed batter at the plate, to the left if you're a right handed batter) every game is a home run derby.

I've read a lot about "glitches" in this game, and I'll cut them a break on that. Baseball games are pretty massive by design--30 teams with full rosters. That's already a lot of code. How are they supposed to animate triples and errors with their AI?

But yeah, pitch a fastball on the outside corner with any pitcher, and it's a guaranteed strike 9 times out of 10, and all of the pitchers are incredibly accurate. And, it seems like I can get at least 1 homerun per inning. I've already had a couple of players hit 4 home runs per game. This is on "Pro" level.

Anyone else playing it? I'm wondering how the online play holds up. Maybe that's more nuanced. I've never maintained a Gold subscription, so I wouldn't really know.
