We've posted our review of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, courtesy of Kurt Kalata. The game got an 8.9/10.

"The defense and prosecuting attorneys aren't merely suits with expensive educations, they're presented as warriors fated to opposing sides due to their professions."
So, what do you think about occupational games slowly making their way to North America? Will they last over the long haul, or is it a fad? So far both Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center are being well-received. Does this mean we could see a door opening for Westerners to be able to buy games like Densha de Go, Bus Driver, or some of those cooking games?
Hopefully, games like this will help shift the mindset of some away from these games being gimmicks.

ARGH, I think it should be "defending and prosecuting attorneys". Stupid me. >(
Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center don't take their professions TOO seriously, which is why they're a lot of fun. I've never played Densha de Go or Ore no Ryori, but they didn't seem to have the same happy-go-lucky demeanor from what I could gather. They'd really need to spice it up for it to really sell. That said, a cooking game would probably be excellent for the DS.

Actually, with its new controller, the Revolution would be awesome for a cooking game. Developers would just need to be careful not to make too much of a line cook, burger flipping simulator.

Are you kidding? A burger flipping simulation would be a great training tool for McDonalds.
Kurt's review actually makes me want to hunt down a copy of Phoenix Wright. Maybe I'll pick it up in January some time -- after this crush of games is over.
As far as cooking games go... that's why I think Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is being delayed. Although this isn't much more than a gut feeling, Eiji Aonuma (the producer) did tell me this at E3:
I read somewhere that you’d love to create a game that includes cooking and baking. Could we expect to see something like that in Zelda?
[laughter] That is kind of a personal thing that I still think about. If Link were to cook, I think that would probably surprise a lot of people. But who knows, maybe it will happen. In the game, Link has empty bottles and he can put items and liquids in. And when he’s got liquids in the bottle you see him drink the liquid – so you can see Link drinking, but you never see him sitting at a table and eating. That would be kind of fun to add to the game.
Mark my words, Nintendo delayed it so they could add a cooking simulation.

There are a ton of Japanese game concepts that I'd love to see come over to this part of the world. I'd love to see some more unique occupational games, and things like that. It would save me the trouble I've been putting into learning Japanese. :-S

Yeah, I'm going to have to look for some of those occupational games when I'm out in Japan. Hopefully there are some decent handheld ones available, as I don't really want to bother modding a PS2 just now.
